No Nut November: the rules, the myths, and how to make it to the 30th

By Antoine Fraboulet, creator of VOW, updated November 3, 2026 · 3 min read

In short. No Nut November started as an internet joke: no orgasm, or at least no masturbation, for the whole of November. The dramatic benefits people claim aren't proven. If porn is your real issue, November can be a good starting point, as long as you set things up before the 1st.

Where No Nut November comes from

The phrase shows up on Urban Dictionary in November 2011, with a simple definition: no masturbating for the whole month of November. It stayed a niche joke for years, then became a huge meme on social media from 2017 on, with its own subreddit. It overlaps with the NoFap community, but it started as a parody, not a method.

Plenty of people do it for laughs, as a bet with friends. Others use it as an excuse to quit something that genuinely weighs on them.

The rules

There's no official organization, so there's no single rulebook. Three versions go around:

Pick your version before the 1st, and write it down. Changing the rules halfway through, on a night when the urge hits, is the most common way to quit without admitting it.

Does No Nut November boost testosterone?

Every year you'll read that finishing November boosts testosterone, confidence or charisma. Nothing solid shows that. The idea traces back to a 2003 Chinese study of 28 volunteers that described a short lived testosterone peak on day 7 of abstinence, not a lasting rise. That study went viral on Reddit in 2011, right when the NoFap community was founded. It was retracted by its journal in December 2021 because it overlapped with another article already published in Chinese.

The challenge isn't dangerous either; it's just not magic.

What participants describe is more modest and more believable: evenings freed up, the satisfaction of winning a bet, and sometimes the realization that porn took up more space than they thought. That's often the real result of the month.

Why so many people drop out

The challenge runs on November 1 enthusiasm. It fades fast, and the content stays two taps away. The first bored or stressful evening, the decision you made in the moment doesn't weigh much anymore. It's the same as any resolution: made by the version of you who isn't tempted, and kept by the one who is.

How to make it through November

  1. Set things up in late October. Block adult sites on your phone before the 1st, not on the night you need it. The tutorial: how to block porn on iPhone.
  2. Put the passcode out of reach. A block you can undo in three taps won't survive the first weekend. Hand your Screen Time passcode to someone, or use a delay to get it back.
  3. Spot your risky evenings. Note when urges come back. Usually: late, in bed, alone, after a bad day.
  4. Have an answer ready. When an urge hits: change rooms, move for three minutes, reread why you started.
  5. Plan for December 1. The classic trap: making it through November, then making up for it in early December. Decide now what happens after.

What if you slip mid month?

The challenge is all or nothing; your progress isn't. Slipping on the 12th doesn't erase the eleven days before. Start again the same day instead of waiting for next November.

After November

If the challenge showed you porn takes up too much room, November isn't the end, it's a test. VOW was built for what comes next: a block in every browser, a passcode you don't know, 24 hours to get it back, and a counter that keeps going after the 30th.

Frequently asked questions

What does No Nut November mean?

“Nut” is slang for ejaculation. No Nut November means a November without orgasm, or at least without masturbation. Many people adapt it into a month without porn.

Does No Nut November have benefits?

No dramatic benefit is proven, especially not for testosterone: the 2003 study behind that claim covered 28 men, found only a short peak on day 7, and was retracted in 2021. The real value is elsewhere: testing, for a month, how much space porn takes in your life.

When does No Nut November start?

On November 1, until the evening of November 30. It's best to set up your block in the last days of October.
